Must-Have Monday

Most people won’t understand this, but preparing for a pageant can be really dangerous. Lots of women do develop eating disorders when competing, and constantly go without nutrients in order to maintain a freakishly skinny appearance (obviously I don’t have this problem, yet I do realize that not being fit is dangerous too). But there is something that can be even more devastating to your body – and it’s something pageant contestants rarely take seriously: tanning.

Let’s face it, a nice glow looks great on stage, and if you don’t have one, you’re pretty much done. But laying in a tanning booth to achieve that look is terrifying to me personally. Not only do I not want to develop skin cancer (and the crap that goes with it – medical bills, death), I really don’t want to look like a handbag at 30 as many contestants do.

Now, a great way to avoid all this is spray tanning, but it is a miserable experience and the tan doesn’t last very long. Additionally, when it starts to rub off, you just look like a reptile that is shedding. Not an attractive look.

I just love, love, LOVE Jergens Natural Glow. It’s the best stuff ever! It builds gradually, so you can correct any issues before they’re blatant like with a spray tan, and it lasts for as long as you use the lotion. Plus, it doesn’t flake off.

I also think it’s a great product for children and teens who compete. Nothing at all frightens me about child pageantry (though Mr. Beauty Queen is constantly horrified by the industry), but the one thing that would freak me out as a pageant mom would be some stranger spraying my kiddo in skivvies. Umm… no.

Anyway, as for my adventures in running, they have been put on hold thanks to a triple-digit heat wave. So I have been using the elliptical. But it's better than nothing, right?

P.S. I really do want world peace.
